WHO WE ARE

Shelterra Group LLC is a general contracting company born in the mountains of Colorado, now at home in the Pacific Northwest. We work from the perspective that building with the resources of the earth – in the most thoughtful and efficient way possible – is paramount.

Rammed Earth House

We are a family run business, located on San Juan Island in the northwestern corner of Washington State. Ken began his work in the carpentry trade 34 years ago and established Shelterra in 1999 with his wife, Susan. Their sons, Will and Makena, have worked with the company throughout their high school years, and continue to contribute while pursuing their own career interests in engineering and construction.

Our crew brings a diverse set of skills to the table. We are accomplished in the carpentry trades, have a deep understanding of all building sub-trades, and are highly capable problem solvers.

At Shelterra, beyond our practice of using sustainable, renewable resources, we keep one primary goal in mind: build with integrity.

Whether we are building a new home, renovating, or executing a repair of the smallest or largest scale, we aim to do what's best for our customers. We offer sensible, collaborative solutions rooted in the fundamentals of both long-established and cutting edge building science. We are innovators, makers, and doers. Whatever your needs are, we will get the job done for you.

My husband's boss at Shelterra has been very supportive when his employee asks to suddenly drop everything so my critical research on an endangered species isn’t left high and dry.
